One of the great things about being retired is that I can declare the end of my working day whenever I want. The Finger Lakes Region is just now starting to enjoy summer’s sun and all of the activities that goes on around the Lakes.

Jeanette and I decided to take a ride to our favorite restaurant in Hammondsport, NY, The Village Tavern Restaurant & Inn located on one corner of the village square at 30 Mechanic Street. (click here). We love the drive along route 54 from Penn Yan to Hammondsport. There one can see all of the beautiful estates near Penn Yan, and then the forest of trees along the road as it winds to the south towards Hammondsport. As one drives along, one sees occasional glimpses of the fabulous cottages that ring the Lake as well as the beautiful blue color of Keuka Lake.

Sure enough the proprietor remembered Jeanette although this was our first trip to Hammondsport, NY this year. She shouted out, “Hello Gloria Secrets”, as if we had just been there last week. I guess that I am jealous of all the attention that Jeanette commands when she enters a restaurant anymore. Jeanette’s favorite meal is their crab cake dinner and we shared that. We ended our dinner with a shared piece of key lime pie washed down with a cup of back coffee. All of this reminded us of the three weeks that we spent in Tarpon Springs, Fl., in March.

The summer evening at Depot Park in Hammondsport, NY was stunning. The shadow of the hills at Hammondsport slowly moved from west to east as the sun sunk behind the hill in the western sky. We watched as a few folks tried to catch the last rays of the day’s sun. No crowds, no noise, just a flow of the clamming evening shadows that comes when the sun goes down over Keuka Lake.
