The Great Pumpkin is Gone!

I checked over at Tomion’s Farm Market near Penn Yan, NY and the Great Pumpkin is gone. I inquired about this and I was told that this pumpkin was sold to the highest bidder, right before Halloween. With the passing of Halloween, things have certainly calmed down here in the Finger Lakes. The local stores in Canandaigua like Wegmans and Lowes have shifted their emphasis to Christmas, and Halloween is only a distant memory.

Out in the fields along routes 5&20 which connect Canandaigua with Geneva, NY, one can still see the remains of thousands of “Great Pumpkin Wannabes.” I am sure that they tried their best to become the Great Pumpkin that we all were awaiting, but they just didn’t have what it took to succeed. The local farmers will be analyzing what went wrong in their fields all during the winter months. Did they use enough fertilizer, were the pumpkin seeds planted too late, or did the fields receive enough rain this summer? Surely, someone is to blame for such a pathetic showing. As for all of these “Great Pumpkin Wannabes”, they will be plowed into the earth (recycled) to serve as nutrients for next years’ crops.

The Great Pumpkin did not arise out of the fields near Penn Yan like Linus and I had been hoping. Instead, last Sunday there was a beautiful full harvest moon that rose up from the hill just beyond the valley at Penn Yan, NY.  And that my dear readers, was a much more satisfying event than waiting for the Great Pumpkin to arise out of the fields before Halloween!
