We usually wait till the end of September before we make a trip to Hammondsport, NY and then drive up the hill to the Bully Hill Winery (click here) to look at the fall foliage. But Saturday was such a beautiful clear day that we decided to see how the vineyards are doing and how Keuka Lake looks from Bully Hill Winery.
I am always amazed that when these vineyards were established, the mode of transportation was a horse drawn wagon. Fortunately for us, our modern cars don’t even seem to labor as we make the assent up the hill.
The trees are still green and none of the leaves on the trees have begun to change color. Everything is still in summer mode including the restaurant at Bully Hill winery which offers some of the most magnificent views in the Finger Lakes. Previously we have had lunch in that restaurant in late September or early October and there can be some very cold winds blowing through their semi-outdoor eating area. But today, the sun was shining and the temperatures were in the low eighties. Perfect for me!
Along the edge of the parking lot, I did spot some golden rod blooming along with a few wild sweet peas. Certainly the golden rod gives one a little preview of what nature has in store for us in September. But for now, Hammondsport, NY is filled with summer visitors and Keuka Lake is the scene of summer boating activities. For all visitors to the Finger Lakes, Hammondsport, NY should be right at the top of your list of must visit places in the Finger Lakes region.
