It was a perfect summer Saturday night in the Finger Lakes and Jeanette and I traveled to one of our most closely guarded secret places in the Finger Lakes. While we were living in Binghamton, NY, we would come to Watkins Glen for dinner on Saturday night just to enjoy a summer drive and Seneca Lake.
The Castel Grisch restaurant and winery (click here) is more than just another winery in the Finger Lakes. It was here many years ago in the fall when Jeanette and I came to the Castel Grisch restaurant for dinner on a weekend that they were having the races in Watkins Glenn. We wanted the table near the window, but we were told that it was reserved. We were almost finished with our dinner when a couple came and sat at the empty table and quietly ate their dinner. Someone near our table told us that it was Rusty Wallace and his wife. Jeanette almost went nuts and wanted him to sign the ketchup bottle on our table!
It was at Castel Grisch that we entertained Jeanette’s cousin Peggy, husband Al, and daughter Heather and on another occasion, we entertained my good friends Bob and Peggy. Both Al and Bob are now departed from this earth but we chose last Saturday night to remember them with a toast on the porch.
The fare is German and I dearly love Swiss/German food. The waitresses are friendly, and the atmosphere – well, it’s out of this world!
